Das MiQua ist eine der Institutionen, die ein wissenschaftliches Volontariat anbieten und als frisch eingespannte Volontärinnen möchten wir in den Beiträgen der Reihe #MiQuadventure ein paar Einblicke in unsere Arbeit geben. Zum Auftakt soll diese erste Episode zeigen, was ein Volontariat überhaupt ist und was wir für eine Rolle im MiQua übernehmen.

Wissenschaftliches Volontariat – kein Freiwilligendienst

Das klassische „was nun?“ ist die Standardfrage, die sich jedem Studenten und jeder Studentin gegen Ende des Studiums stellt. Viele bemühen sich um einen möglichst reibungslosen Übergang ins Berufsleben. Der gestaltet sich jedoch oftmals schwieriger als gedacht und komplizierter als ohnehin schon befürchtet.

Das wissenschaftliche Volontariat hat sich hierzulande als berufliche „Station“ durchgesetzt, für die zum Teil sogar eine Promotion verlangt wird. In Bezug auf Museen wie zum Beispiel das MiQua bedeutet es eine praktische Ausbildung im Museumsbereich, die sich an ein Hochschulstudium anschließt. Während dieser zwei Jahre als wissenschaftliche Volontärinnen lernen wir die Kernbereiche und alle mehr oder weniger „traditionellen“ Abteilungen eines Museums kennen, die Arbeitsabläufe einzuschätzen und erforderliche Strukturen einzuordnen. Dieses Gesamtpaket dient als umfassende Vorbereitung auf eine spätere Tätigkeit im Museum.

Volontariat im Museum… ohne Museum?

Nein, das MiQua auf dem Platz vor dem Rathaus hat noch nicht eröffnet, aber genau deshalb gibt es beim MiQua noch einen spannenden Bereich on top: Der Aufbau eines neuen Museums, die Konzeptplanungen und alle Herausforderungen und Chancen, die damit einhergehen, erleben wir in aufgeschlossener Atmosphäre jeden Tag und dürfen auch einen Teil zu diesem Projekt im Herzen der Stadt Köln beitragen.

Unsere Aufgaben wie auch Ziele werden im Curriculum geregelt und regelmäßig überprüft. So haben wir die Möglichkeit in allen museumsrelevanten Bereichen mitzuarbeiten: Die Teilnahme an wöchentlichen Teamsitzungen gehört ebenso dazu wie die Recherche – unter anderem von Objekten – oder das Schreiben von Texten. Die zukünftig ausgestellten Objekte müssen beispielsweise mit einer kleinen erklärenden Beschreibung versehen werden. Auf diese Art arbeiten wir stetig bei der geplanten Dauerausstellung mit und unterstützen diese mit jeweils einem eigenen spannenden Projekt, was im Laufe der nächsten Monate ausgearbeitet wird. Das ist sozusagen unser Puzzlestück, das in die neue Dauerausstellung eingesetzt wird.

Der Landschaftsverband liefert mit seinen 19 Museen und Kultureinrichtungen genug Ziele für Ausflüge, um auch einmal über den kölschen Tellerrand hinausblicken zu können. Auch von diesen Treffen, bei denen wir andere Museen besuchen und uns mit den Volontärinnen und Volontären vor Ort austauschen, berichten wir in unserer Reihe.

#MiQuadventure Episode 1

The trainees’ arrival

The MiQua is one of the institutions that offers an academic traineeship, and as recently-hired trainees, we want to give you some insights into our work and into our contributions to the #MiQuadventure series. To start with, this first episode will show you what an academic traineeship is all about and the scope of our role at MiQua.

Academic traineeship – not voluntary service

The classic „what now?“ is the standard question every student faces at the end of his or her studies. Many strive for a smooth transition into working life. However, this is often more difficult than expected and more complicated than already feared.

The academic traineeship has established itself in this country as a professional „post“, for which sometimes even a doctorate can be required. Regarding museums such as the MiQua, it means practical training in the museum sector after one has finished his or her studies. During these two years as academic trainees, we become familiar with the core areas, and more or less all the “traditional” museum departments, assessing the work processes and classifying the necessary structures. This complete package serves as comprehensive preparation for a later employment in a museum.

Academic traineeship in a museum…without a museum?

Not quite: The MiQua on the square in front of the town hall has not yet opened, but that is exactly why the MiQua offers a further exciting aspect: we are able to experience the construction of a new museum, the conceptual planning and all the challenges and opportunities that come with that every day in an open-minded atmosphere. Moreover, we can also contribute our own part to this project in the heart of the city of Cologne.

Both, our tasks and goals are regulated in the curriculum and are regularly reviewed. Therefore, we have the opportunity to participate in all areas relevant to the museum: participating in weekly team sessions is as much a part of this as researching objects (among other things) and writing texts. Objects to be exhibited in the future must be labelled with a short explanatory description, for example. In this way, we are constantly collaborating on the planned permanent exhibition and are able to support the MiQua with our own exciting project, which we develop over the course of the next few months. That is our puzzle piece, so to speak, which will be part of the new permanent exhibition.

Trainees on tour

With 19 museums and cultural institutions, the Rhineland Regional Council provides enough destinations for excursions, enabling you as well as us to look beyond the borders of Cologne. We will also report on these encounters as part of our series in which we visit other museums and exchange ideas with the trainees on site.
